Public Transit Assistance Program

The Public Transportation Assistance Program (PTAP) provides funding to municipalities and community organizations operating a fixed-route service for capital assets like vehicles, bus terminals and shelters.

Funding is for capital purchases that support the long-term sustainability of the fixed-route transit service. Alternatively, the funds can be placed in a capital reserve until they’re required. The funding is not for offsetting the cost of operating the transit service.

Approval is subject to annual budget approval. Funding might be reduced or pro-rated depending on the total new funding requests.

Funding amount

Funding is based on the total annual ridership and the population of the service area (for example, the number of people within 1 km of a bus stop). Contact the Community Transportation team to get an estimate of funding availability.
